train of thought

I was in the midst of a discussion when something someone said led me on a train of thought. The person said something about how in order to get a job at a certain place a person has to know someone there... or something to that effect. Afterwards I wondered why this was.

I think that one of the reasons why situations like this exist is because people want assurance. They want someone to be able to vouch for a person and say, "Hey this person is great. They work hard and do their best." People want a guarantee. No one wants to take a risk. No one wants to be responsible for making a poor decision. Think about it, we do it all the time. You ask your server at a restaurant, "what's good here?" You ask other people what kind of car or computer or xyz product you should buy. People get fixed up on blind dates all the time. People just want a scapegoat for their decision-making. If things go awry, blame it on the person who gave you 'bad advice'. It's a way to camouflage your own ineptitude.

or maybe people just get a little friendly with the boss...

All I know is I want to make it on my own merit. I want to earn anything and everything that comes my way... good or bad. So I'm going to work hard, live fearlessly, and (maybe) love without holding back. ;)
